Double Walled Blue Bowl
These beautiful bowls are formed in plaster moulds made from mooring buoys.
The dry bowls are biscuit fired in an electric kiln before being glazed and raku and smoke fired.
Those to be raku fired are coated with a slip resist then glazed and fired in a gas kiln. When hot they are placed in a lidded container of sawdust or paper. Clay left unglazed becomes gunmetal black and thickly glazed areas white; the black/grey patterns of dots and streaks are caused by the smoke absorbed into the clay body through air bubbles and thickness variations in the glaze.
When cool the pots are scrubbed clean in water, then sealed and polished using beeswax.
